facts
Altamira was the first dwelling of Europeans and also the first gallery of art.
Altamira – a cave located in Cantabrian mountains in northern Spain, near Santillana del Mar. It was discovered in 1879. It is a site with many perfectly preserved rock paintings made by primeval hunters, representatives of the so-called Magdalenean culture.
In the main part of the cave, on the roof with an area of over 100m2, animal silhouettes were discovered. A dozen or so bisons, deer, roes, horses and ibexes, as well as geometrical shapes painted in three colours: red, black and purple. The frieze is 18.0 metres long and 9.0 metres wide. The height of the cave in which it was found is about 2.0 metres. The artist took advantage of the natural features of the rock, its monticules and bends by painting on them silhouettes of bison in different positions: kneeling, jumping, falling. The whole herd of bison presented in the picture is in movement. It looks as if it was trying to stop in front of the twelve-metre long figure of a hind, painted on the surface at the furthest point. The head of the hind is pointing in the direction of the exit from the cave. There are also anthropomorphic engravings and the prints and shapes of palms. The earliest pictures are about 15 000 years old. It is one of the biggest achievements of paleolithic art. Researchers often claim the pictures are of a magical character, it seems more probable though that they are just an expression of the pursuit to explore the world: a possibility of reflecting reality, the beginning of art, science, and maybe even writing.
