The origin of the name
The beauty of gardens and their rich and equivocal symbolism fascinated Józef Mehoffer, (1869 - 1946) one of the greatest painters of the Young Poland movement. The garden at the house of the painter on Krupnicza 26 (with a surface area of 1600 m2) was constructed in the surrounding of high city buildings. It had existed in a different form when the owner of the house was Józef Szujski, later the garden was destroyed. Mehoffer bought the house in 1932, and paid equal attention to the reconstruction of the house and the garden. He separated it from the next big city house with a green screen, and marked out paths, flowerbeds, and a vegetable garden. A significant central part was designed as a parterre with fruit trees on three sides, open on the side of the house. He also made sure that the garden, which was later remembered as being full of sun, trees and flowers, was accessible directly from the living room and when the weather was good could serve the host and his guests.
